Symbol Saturday – Rings

The strength of the circle as an enclosing shape accounts for the protective significance of rings, which are sometimes credited with semi-magical powers. In legend, the force-field created by a ring was often more powerful if it contained a precious stone, as gemstones were once thought to be of supernatural origin.

Stones believed to have special protective value include the diamond, because its divine radiance would deter the Devil, the emerald, in legend a stone fallen from Lucifer’s crown, and the agate, which folklore said could deflect weapons.
